Re-Manufactured Wind Turbines. Today, U.S. customers purchasing a new wind turbine can expect to pay $3,500 to $4,000 per kilowatt installed. When other variables such as actual power generation, purchase price of electricity, tax incentives, and production incentives are considered, the paybacks for a customer owned new wind turbine can be greater than 10 years. For many, this is a significant hurdle to overcome. Re-manufactured turbines can be installed for $2,000 to $2,500 per kilowatt installed; a 40% - 50% reduction from purchasing new. This means that investment paybacks are approximately 5 to 7 years depending on site specifics.
Chariot Wind sources, re-manufactures, and markets wind turbines from 200 to 850 kW, specifically, those that have been in active service for 7 to 15 years. The turbines are operationally sound and have become available for purchase as they are removed from service to make way for larger turbines. Turbines chosen by Chariot Wind are restored to new operating conditions through the replacement or upgrade of selected components (bearings, generators, control systems, remote monitoring, etc.) and cosmetic restoration. The service life of Chariot Wind’s re-manufactured turbines is expected to exceed the payback period, offering clients many years of “locked-in” energy costs.
